]]>March is Women's month and as a Black Woman owned business, we are huge supporters of other businesses with a similar mission of highlighting African culture in unique ways. In this interview, we speak with, Déborah Kabwang, the owner of Kanfuela Kaffé about her entrepreneurial journey and vision.
I was inspired to start my own coffee business because of a few things. The main reason is simply because of my love and passion for coffee, especially Congolese coffee. I wanted to introduce flavorful, Specialty Congolese Coffee to the world.
For the last decade, I’d been on this journey to visit as many locally-owned coffee shops or to try as many different kinds of specialty coffee from all over the world—simply because I was passionate. In all of those years, it was so difficult to get my hands on Specialty Coffee from D.R. Congo. When I eventually did, I discovered how delicious it was and made it my mission to only serve Congolese coffee in my future shop.
I had started playing around with the idea of possibly opening a coffee shop first, and then becoming a roaster years down the road. I knew nothing about roasting then. Well, after going back home to D.R. Congo for the first time in 2021, I learned more about my family history and learned for the first time that my grandparents owned a coffee farm and that almost everyone in my family was crazy about coffee like I was. I was intrigued and (shook). Everything came full circle. It’s in my DNA!
I came back to the U.S. inspired to start the coffee shop, but then slowly got into roasting. I fell in love with roasting. Another thing that inspired me was knowing how much coffee we have in Congo that is being smuggled out and how producers and farmers are not getting paid for their hard work. I wanted to make a difference.
As far as the name KANFUELA, I wanted to introduce the culture as well—not just coffee. I chose the name KANFUELA after many attempts with other names. Everything I came up with didn’t fit my vision. Then I remembered a conversation my aunt had with my dad when I was in Congo. I had just brewed fresh coffee for my dad and I. As I poured from my Moka pot, my aunt smiled and asked my dad in Tshiluba: “Oh, Déborah also loves “Kanfuela.” It was my first time hearing that word. It stuck with me. I didn’t know why yet. Months later when I was looking for names for my coffee brand, I asked my dad, how do you say coffee in Tshiluba again? And he confirmed, “KANFUELA.” I kept repeating it to myself and knew this was it. It sounded perfect. Tshiluba is one of the many languages spoken in D.R. Congo; one of the languages my grandparents spoke. Kanfuela is what my grandfather called coffee, but the word had been forgotten in history and replaced with “café”.
This is such a long process! Our coffee selection is very small, and it’s for a reason. I wanted to ensure that I work with importers who share the same vision. My partners, where I source our Congolese coffee, are a social impact coffee importer (also minority-owned), and work directly with the producers in D.R. Congo—the same goes with my Tanzanian importer. We have a really good professional relationship. Before I chose to partner with them, I ensured that their words backed up with action. In fact, their Chief Quality officer in Bukavu, D.R. Congo, who works on site with the producers, was my primary source.
Not only am I sourcing some of the best coffee in Congo, I’m also making a difference in the lives of the producers with the coffee I purchase. In the future, I hope to work directly with different producers in multiple regions of D.R. Congo. Currently, we are mainly sourcing from South Kivu.
Kanfuela Kaffé is very unique because Congolese Specialty Coffees are very rare and hard to find in the U.S. It is hard to describe the flavor, because all of them are different and all have unique taste notes. Oftentimes, customers are reluctant to try because perhaps they never even knew that coffee “grows” in Congo. But once they do try, I love to watch their face transform into utter shock and amazement. Two things that make our coffee different:
Firstly, we focus on sourcing grade 1 coffee from D.R. Congo, which is the highest rated coffee. Our beans typically have no primary defects.
Secondly, we ensure to roast every batch with consistency, quality, and lots of passion.
My favorite brewing method is the pour-over method. It is a slow brew method that extracts the most flavor and has the most amazing aroma. I used the V60 by Hario. If you are pressed for time, I recommend a French Press.
Don’t be afraid! Take a risk! Research, network, ask questions, and put yourself out there. When I started Kanfuela, I NEVER would have imagined it would be where it is today in just a bit over a year, but I had a vision and that vision wouldn’t let me breathe until I launched my company.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions and rich cultural heritage of the African diaspora. Here are five ways to honor Black history and support African culture this month and beyond.
]]>Read books, watch documentaries, and learn about the rich history of African Americans. Educating yourself on Black History is crucial in understanding the experiences and contributions of African Americans throughout history. Learning about Black history offers a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the African diaspora and the struggles that have been overcome.
While there are many classic and modern books and films to watch, here are 10 for you to consider:
Support African fashion designers and entrepreneurs by purchasing their clothing, accessories, and more. Shopping from African fashion brands is a meaningful way to support and celebrate the African diaspora. By choosing to purchase from brands like D’iyanu which offers African inspired products by a Nigerian founder, you are helping to promote and preserve the unique and rich cultural heritage of Africa.
Supporting Black-owned shops during Black History Month is a powerful way to celebrate and honor the African American community. By choosing to patronize these businesses, you are helping to create economic opportunities and support the financial stability of Black families and communities. Beyond Black History Month, continuing to support Black-owned businesses is crucial in creating long-term economic and social change.
Advocating for change during Black History Month is an essential part of honoring the legacy and contributions of African Americans. This is a time to not only reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the past, but also to take action to create a more equitable and just future for all.
Volunteering at places that support the African American community during Black History Month is a meaningful way to show your support and to contribute to positive change. By giving your time and energy to these organizations, you are helping to provide essential services and support to communities that have historically faced systemic barriers and discrimination
The history and culture of African Americans are an essential part of our national story, and by honoring Black History Month, we are showing our respect and appreciation for this legacy.
]]>There's no denying it: African print dresses have become a staple in the fashion world. They're everywhere, and they're available in a variety of styles—from casual to formal, from long to short. They come in every color under the sun and in a wide range of fabrics.
But there's one thing that unites them all: their unmistakable African influence. The prints themselves are often created using modern takes on traditional designs from different African countries, and they're usually made from durable natural materials like cotton, silk, and wool. At D’IYANU, we are inspired by our African heritage and design African inspired prints to honor our ancestors.
When it comes to African print dresses, the possibilities are endless.
African print fabric is a popular choice for clothing and accessories because there is an array of colors and designs to choose from. The beautiful prints make it possible to create an outfit that matches your taste and personality.
If you're looking for the perfect dress this season, consider one of the many African maxi dresses that have become so popular in recent years. They are beautiful, comfortable and can be worn in a variety of ways depending on your mood and the occasion.
They are especially great for women who want to wear something that is both fashionable and comfortable, as well as something that they can wear to work or for a night out on the town.
If you're looking for a new outfit that will be perfect for any occasion, then your closet is definitely in need of some African maxi dresses! Here are five ways African print maxi dresses will upgrade your wardrobe:
Maxi dresses have been around for many years now and even though they have changed in terms of design and style, they remain popular among women of all ages. African print maxi dresses are a great way to make a statement wherever you go. With so many different styles available in African fashion and designs influenced by it, it is easy to find an outfit that suits your style perfectly. You can choose from short or long-sleeved dresses and skirts of different lengths. This gives you plenty of options when it comes time to select the perfect dress for your needs!
Whether it's a bright Ankara, dashiki, or mudcloth African print, these dresses are eye-catching. You can use them as an opportunity to make a statement about your culture, heritage, or even just your personality. Other styles of dress might be more subtle and reserved—but when you wear an African maxi dress, you're making a bold statement to the world.
Typically made in cotton fabric with prints ranging from muted mudcloth to vibrant Kente, these dresses traverse seasons with ease. It’s all in the sleeve type, how it is styled, and the coloration of the print that decides if it’s season appropriate. For halter top or short sleeve maxi dresses that are breezy and lightweight, they’re perfect for hot summer days. For the fall and winter months, you can either layer your maxi dress with a jacket or sweater or choose a dress with long sleeves. There are many options on the market, including our best-selling Rehema maxi dress with long sleeves or Kulale maxi dress with its shoulder ties providing air for the warm months.
We all know that maxi dresses are great for weddings and formal events where you want to look stunning and elegant. But did you know that these dresses are also perfect for everyday wear? The dresses are super versatile—you can accessorize them up or down depending on your mood and where you're headed. For example, if you want to hit up a fancy event, then pair a maxi dress with some heels, but if you're going to be running errands all day then throw on some sneakers! The versatility of these dresses is what makes them stand out from other types of clothing.
If you're looking for a new way to spice up your wardrobe this season, consider adding an African inspired print maxi dress to your collection! The colors are inspired by African culture, making it easy to transition from day to night without having to change clothes. The best thing about these dresses is that they look good on any body type. They will fit snugly around your waistline without showing too much skin while also being fashionable and comfortable. That's why we recommend our Zendaya Women's Maxi Dress. The African inspired fabric used on this dress is soft, lightweight, and breathable. It also has a detachable sash at the waist that will keep the dress snug against your body without pinching or discomfort. African inspired prints are an important part of our culture and are used to represent beauty, history, and royalty. These intricate patterns have been used for centuries to represent the importance of a person or occasion. Styles like our Amari Women's African Print Button-Up Top, and Chane Men's African Print Button-Up Shirt are inspired by traditional Mudcloth textiles. Mudcloth, which originated in Mali was historically worn by the hunters of the tribe, and not only seen as a symbol of status, but also as a work of art.
Popular Adire prints stem from a traditional African textile design created by the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Styles like our Zendaya Women's African Print Maxi Dress and Chane Men's African Print Button-Up Shirt in the Jade Amber Adire print create a beautiful complementary ensemble for a special night out. The vibrant colors and geometric shapes also tell stories and transmit messages from one generation to the next. These pieces offer a source of inspiration and empowerment, allowing those who wear them to show their creativity and express their unique style.
Inspired by the Kente cloth of Ghana, our Purple Navy Kente cloth pieces like Kimiya African Print Faux Wrap Skirt and Meka Henley shirt provide a beautiful update to traditional style. Representing culture goes beyond Black History Month and these styles are sure to carry you throughout the year!
African fashion is an important form of cultural expression and can be used to celebrate, honor, and protect African cultures while also strengthening the African American culture birthed from it. We continue to be influenced by the designs, practices, strength, and rich histories that our ancestors have passed on to us and this will always be reflected in the products created here at D’IYANU.

We have a guest post by Mercy Tandoh, LMHC of RAI Counseling Services about Mental Health Awareness in Black Communities. We want to help normalize this important topic.
]]>Guest post by Mercy Tandoh, LMHC
Let’s start with some facts…
According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, Adult Blacks and African Americans are more likely to have feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness than adult whites.
According to a national survey by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Sixteen percent (4.8 million) of Black and African American people reported having a mental illness, and 22.4 percent of those (1.1 million people) reported a serious mental illness over the past year.
58.2 percent of Black and African American young adults 18-25 and 50.1 percent of adults 26-49 with serious mental illness did NOT receive treatment, and nearly 90 percent of Black and African American people over the age of 12 with a substance use disorder did NOT receive treatment.
The facts speak for themselves and the figures are worrisome. Black Americans may face mental health obstacles at a higher rate than other groups, yet Black people are also less likely than others to seek and receive the treatment they need. Several studies of attitudes and beliefs about mental health have shown that African American adults may view mental illness as a weakness or highly stigmatizing. These beliefs are formed through personal experiences, family life, culture, and traditions - resulting in low psychological openness, and low help-and-treatment-seeking, which ultimately affect coping behaviors. To address the stigma and this perception of mental health challenges, certain steps can be taken to raise mental health awareness and promote acceptance in the Black community.
Address the stigma head-on: Mental illness does not discriminate based on skin color. We are all human and the reality is that a lot of us will struggle with our mental health at some point. Getting support is not a weak thing to do. Become aware of your attitudes and beliefs to reduce implicit bias or negative perceptions of mental illness.
Validate barriers and disseminate information in cultural sensitive ways: Valuable information about mental health doesn’t always reach the Black community, and if it does, it may be culturally biased and may also be received through the lens of stigma. It is therefore important to educate professionals, communities, families and friends about the challenges of mental health within the black community, ensuring that the information is not only received but also making sure it is understood.
Normalize conversations about mental health. Call out and bring awareness to the use of language that helps perpetuate the stigma. Normalize talking about mental health challenges. More conversations about mental health should occur.
Acknowledge cultural differences. Mental health professionals should reflect on their cultural biases, and engage in continued education about cultural sensitivity to provide services that are useful and effective. Beyond the stigma and judgment which may prevent Black and African American people from seeking treatment for their mental illnesses, many struggle with the choice of mental health professionals because some may worry that mental health care practitioners are not culturally competent enough to treat their specific issues. Representation and understanding amongst mental health providers matters.
“At RAI Counseling Services, we are a black-owned mental health practice that understands the intricacies and sensitivities of mental health within the black community”, says Mercy Tandoh, LMHC - Founder and Director. “We have a diverse team of culturally sensitive therapists and our mission is to support our clients through respect, compassion, and empowerment” she said. In addition to stigma and access to mental health providers who cater to ethnic and cultural gaps among patient populations, some of these barriers are socioeconomic. In lower-income communities, families may not be able to afford counseling or have health insurance access that they could use for treatment and pharmaceutical intervention. This is a critical reason why Mercy Tandoh also created the RAI Cares Program. Understanding the challenges black and minority communities face, The RAI Cares Program's goal is to provide affordable and accessible counseling to low-income clients, clients without insurance, or clients who are having difficulty finding counselors that accept their insurance.

For the adventurous dad whose idea of a good time is to explore things outdoors, give a weekend camping trip a go. Spending time in nature, potentially catching and cooking your dinner, and having fireside chats allows for an amazing opportunity to bond and make lasting memories with your dad. If camping in the great outdoors is not yours (or his thing), give one of the popular Getaway houses a go, so long as you don’t mind a small space and sharing sleeping quarters. These houses provide the idea of camping but without any of the work.
Lots of dads are into sports, right? Of course! You can’t go wrong with engaging in some conversation around baseball, basketball, football, golf, or even hockey with pop. Instead of simply watching his favorite sport, take him to a game! No matter the seat location, he will love the thoughtfulness. Can’t make it to a game? Not a problem. Try taking him to a field, court or place where his favorite game can be played and play with him. Engaging in quality time is so important.
So many dads want to be the ‘cool dad’ and always stay up to date with everything going on with the ‘youngsters’, including their style. Well, if this is speaking to your dad, then we have something for you. Our Keyon African Print Button Up in Sky Blue Mudcloth paired with our Debare Men’s African Print Shorts also in Sky Blue Mudcloth will certainly have him fitting in yet standing out. If he wants to go with more of a solid look, we recommend pairing our Lubanzi Men’s Embroidered African Tunic in White and the Adil Men’s Traditional Dress Pants with Drawstring also in White. With either style, he will certainly be feeling himself.
The artsy and creative father would love to be immersed in all things eccentric. In most cities, there are art galleries and museums that are open on the weekends and offer brilliant selections of works. May we suggest planning your own personal art walk where a selection of galleries or museums are highlighted and you all go explore them. If planning isn’t your thing, opt for one major museum and go see the major exhibition they have on display at the moment. Not only will you get to soak in wonderful pieces but you’ll be able to engage in great dialogue with one another after.
And last but certainly not least, we have the dad who is the lover of all things food. We’re talking the ‘barbecuing every Sunday in the summer’ or the ‘heading to the finest restaurant in the city’ kind of dad. If you haven’t already considered this - make reservations at a restaurant that he has never been to which serves his favorite cuisine. If he is the type that prefers to cook himself, either plan a cookout in his honor or ask to make his favorite meal for him.
Whether your father is into sports, adventure, food, style or art, or anything in between, this guide can help you navigate. Be sure to always have dad looking dapper in some of the finest African Print clothes available anywhere. Head to our site to explore more looks and styles to compliment any occasion. To make it even easier, we created a Father’s Day Gift Guide to help you find the best gifts for day. Happy Father’s Day to all!
I love D’iyanu! My eyes came across D’iyanu when I was scrolling on Instagram. I saw a really cute guy wearing some gorgeous modern Africanwear and followed the page immediately! : D As I scrolled through the account, I was elated to find such gorgeous unique africanwear with a modern touch. I placed my order on a beautiful suit set and have been in love ever since.
My style is what I call updated classic. I like clean lines and structured looks, but I love to break things up with and pops of color and worldly patterns. I tend to keep my accessories light but use my clothing as the statement piece!
Azah in our Cool Blue Adire Hana Dress
My country has a lot of beautiful traditional patterns. One of the patterns is called atoghu. I use it in a lot of my daily looks, pairing items with atoghu scarves, crop tops, and dresses. I would say my Cameroon heritage is present all throughout my home. One of my favorite décor pieces are actually a prized possession of mine-a pair of spears from my tribe Mankon, handed down to me from my great grandfather.
I am a little bit of an old soul- I only started using Tiktok last year! After Big Brother, I wanted to utilize other forms of social media to leverage the platform I got catapulted into. I opened a YouTube channel to give my audience a peek in my life through vlogs. I’ve started to incorporate more of my passion for cooking on both platforms.
One trend I absolutely love are crochet knits! I picked up a beautiful knit crop top and bathing suit on my last visit to Ghana in April.
I love the Hana African print stretch dress! The fabric is a blue resist style fabric that looks so similar to a resist style pattern in Cameroon called Ndop. It hugs my body perfectly and falls right in line with my style!
Azah is wearing an extra small in our Hana Dress
I am influenced by women in general. I love the bold choices Rihanna makes! Her no care attitude has given me the confidence to push the envelope every once in a while. However, I loved the way my grandmother would dress—very simple but extremely flattering to her body. She would keep dresses for years but they always looked wonderful on her. Her dressing is what has influenced me to not chase trends but choose timeless, classic pieces that never go out of style.
I am what the Big Brother community calls a “superfan”. I’ve watched all the seasons and I watch the live feeds as well. I consider myself a social person and wanted to see how I would fare in the Big Brother house. I decided to send in an application and was elated to make it through the process and in the house out of 45,000 applicants! My experience is just another confirmation that you should always go for what you want! You can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
Thank you so much! Pageants have helped me in so many parts of my life! I wouldn’t say pageants influenced my decision, but they definitely helped me in Big Brother and so many parts of my life. How to carry yourself in front of others, how to think on the spot, how to speak eloquently in interviews, and how to stand out amongst competition -I’ve learned all of that through pageants.
Being in the Cookout meant so much to me. I love that America got to see so many different types of black people unite to accomplish a mission. The Cookout was able to show America that black people are not monolith and that there is diversity and variety in black culture. Being able to expose my proud Cameroon heritage through my clothing, food and style was a beautiful thing! People who had never heard of Cameroon now have desires to learn more about our beautiful country.
Absolutely amazing! Having watched all the seasons, I have seen people who look like me bullied, ostracized, and attacked because of the color of their skin. To be able to do my part in paving the way for other little girls who look like me to go after their goals —even in the realm of a reality television game show is truly humbling!
Azah wears a size extra small in our Shanina Wrap Top
Thank you to Azah for taking the time to talk with us! You can find her on Instagram @wonderfulworldofaz

]]>For the mothers that don’t live in the same place as you, virtual celebrations work just as well. May we suggest sending her favorite foods, flowers, or even products to her doorstep. For extra bonus points, send her something customized or products from a small Black owned business. We have an array of wonderful items that could suit the mother in your life well.
For the mothers that live in the same city or place as you, make reservations at a local restaurant that has great reviews. Spoiling her with a nice wine and dine experience will certainly put a smile on her face. Bring her favorite flowers, if she is into that, and a lovely keepsake that comes straight from your heart.
For moms who insist on having a day to themselves without any and all responsibility, send her to a theater for a lovely dance performance or play. More than likely, there will always be a production at the local playhouse and if she likes the performing arts, you will be winning at this mother’s day game. You can also opt to have a customized menu at her favorite restaurant or setting her up with her manicurist for a mani and pedi day.
Now, mother’s day is not all about gifts and spoiling. It is about celebrating the humans that either gave us life and/or sustained our lives. A thoughtful way to do this can include a well put together picture book for the memories shared over the years. Or perhaps a letter that is heartfelt and includes ways in which you love her. Another really simple yet thoughtful way is to share dialogue via phone or in person around why you are grateful for her. The thing that she may want the most may not have a material value associated. Keep that in mind when deciding what to do for her.
If you are a mother yourself and are looking for ways to celebrate you, consider treating yourself to brunch or, if you want to go the extra mile (both literally and figuratively), book a solo trip for the weekend. Now this trip can be local like a staycation or skip over to the nearest cool town where you can indulge in the eats and arts. Deciding to spend the day solo doesn’t mean you don’t want to be around your loved ones but it can simply mean prioritizing your own self care and preservation.
Everyone may not be keen on celebrating this day so we wanted to make sure that those of us who opt out feel honored as well. On this day, give yourself the permission to do whatever you please. The holiday falls on a Sunday and Sundays typically mean bomb farmer’s markets, community, and chill vibes. Check out your local marketplaces and pick up the best produce, local handmade crafts from the artisans, and enjoy a nice glass of rosé. If that's not your thing, slide on over to see a film or pop by to view the latest art exhibitions at the local Black owned gallery. Sundays are made for relaxing and preparing for your week ahead and you get to experience it just in that way.
Whether you decide to spend time with mom or loved mother figure or simply by yourself, there are plenty of options. Taking the time to be in celebration looks different for everyone and there is no wrong choice. May we encourage you to remember that this is another day of celebration to uplift the women in our lives… even if it is yourself. You, too, deserve it all.
